I am using Grid Focus on one of my blogs ( http://www.socialplasm.com ) and have found it to be an excellent choice for many reasons but three stand out:
1. Derek (the creator) is very involved in supporting this and other themes he has developed. This is considerable seeing as how the themes are public and free. This means that he also donates a good portion of his time to supporting the users as best as he can for free as well!
2. The code is a step up from other free themes out there. This benefits both the code-minded and those who don’t know as much about editing the source of their skin.
3. Although ‘out of the box’ the theme is not set up for widgets, it can be ‘widgetized’ very easily.
As news themes go, I think it is a great choice. Especially for the price!

Thanks for the details, Sam. We run them through the basic paces but it’s always helpful to hear how people like them when used day-in-day-out.

Hi Sarah. First I should say ‘thank you’. Nice website. I wonder how do you judge the theme? Would you be able to provide your marking scheme so theme developer can have a guide line to follow?

@Kelvin: thanks for stopping by! I’m still tweaking the algorithm a bit, but you can take a look at the general concepts. I’m open to thoughts and questions if you are wondering about a specific theme or metric, though.
